How to Design Your Bedroom

Creating a bedroom that meets your specific needs and preferences can greatly enhance your overall sense of well-being and comfort. By understanding your bedroom needs, planning an efficient layout, choosing the right color palette, selecting suitable lighting, and incorporating personal touches, you can transform your bedroom into a space that truly reflects your personality and promotes restful sleep.

When out in the world, we’re donning an exterior, we’re out of our comfort zone and are usually cautious about what we wear, what we do, what we say. When we come home and retreat to our bedroom, we’re at our most relaxed self, we’re in a safe space, we’re where we’re most comfortable. Our bedroom is our solace where we can relax, unwind and recharge after a long day

1. Making Your Bedroom a Haven of Wellness

Our bedroom is where we spend private time building our relationship, whether on a video call or in person, making it our love nest. It’s where we focus on our personal growth. Whether we like to read, introspect or meditate, our bedroom becomes our temple.

If you’re one of those who follows wellness, you might consider your bedroom your sacred space where you only go to sleep. Regardless of whether you’re able to follow it or not, we’re all well aware that a sound sleep is the most healing thing for our health, both mental and physical and is the best healer for our wounds, both mental and tangible. Good sleep can make or break your day, your exam, your presentation in a meeting, your health, your relationship. So your bedroom also becomes a healing chamber.

How your bedroom is organised impacts everything about you. If your space is cluttered, you’d find it hard to find things in your head, as well as your life. If your space is unkempt, your stuff will get ruined and you might experience frequent headaches.

Our bedroom thus plays the most significant role in literally every aspect of our life. Which is why it’s the space that should be designed with the most care. With a firm understanding of this, read on as we suggest some absolutely unique ideas to help you create the bedroom of your dreams and thus manifest the life of your wishes.

Understanding Your Bedroom Needs

When it comes to designing a bedroom that suits your needs, it is important to start by identifying your personal preferences and considering the factors that can contribute to your health and wellness. Your bedroom is your sanctuary, a place where you can unwind and recharge after a long day. It's essential to create a space that reflects your unique style and personality while also promoting relaxation and restful sleep.

Take some time to reflect on what makes you feel most comfortable and relaxed in a bedroom setting. Consider factors such as the amount of natural light you prefer, the level of privacy you desire, and any specific activities you enjoy doing in your bedroom (such as reading or watching television). The color scheme of your bedroom can also play a significant role in setting the mood. Soft, soothing colors like blues and greens can promote a sense of calm, while warmer tones like yellows and oranges can create a cozy atmosphere.

2. Considering Environmental Factors

Factors such as air quality, temperature control, and noise levels can greatly impact your quality of sleep. Consider incorporating features like air purifiers or soundproofing materials to create a more peaceful sleeping environment.

In addition to physical health, mental well-being is also crucial. Creating a clutter-free environment can help reduce stress and promote a sense of serenity. Consider incorporating storage solutions like under-bed drawers or wall-mounted shelves to keep your space organized and serene.

Most of our houses now have aluminium window sections with glazed windows that do not allow air and sound inside the room. Whilst this has almost become a necessity to not let in pollution and to isolate the indoors from the outdoor weather, it is not very healthy as it leads to the room having stale air which leads to frequent headaches and bad moods for occupants. So plan a mesh window that allows air in within a small part of the window wherein you can open the glass window and keep the mesh window closed so as to allow your room to be filled with fresh air during the day. If noise is a concern, close the glass window before sleeping.

Planning Your Bedroom Layout

Maximizing space efficiency and incorporating furniture that fits your needs are key elements in creating a functional bedroom layout. When planning the layout of your bedroom, it's essential to consider not only the functionality of the space but also the aesthetic appeal. The placement of furniture, lighting, and decor elements can significantly impact the overall ambiance of the room. By strategically arranging your bed, nightstands, and dressers, you can create a harmonious flow that promotes relaxation and restful sleep.

3. Maximizing Space Efficiency

If you have a small bedroom, it is important to make the most of the available space. Consider using multifunctional furniture such as storage beds or bedside tables with built-in drawers. Additionally, utilizing vertical storage solutions, such as wall-mounted shelves or hanging organizers, can help maximize space. Another effective way to optimize space efficiency is to declutter regularly and only keep essential items in your bedroom. By minimizing visual distractions and maintaining a tidy environment, you can create a sense of tranquility and spaciousness even in a compact room.

A lot of people try to fit in queen size or double beds in the room even if there is less space and a single occupant. They in turn then begin to study and work from their bed since there isn’t enough space left for a table. Opt for single beds, or get beds that become double beds when required so that you can use the rest of the space during the day or when a bigger bed isn’t needed. This also allows for more movement space and for the room to look bigger.

For young adults, another great option in small bedrooms are higher beds that have more storage tucked in underneath. This allows for clean, organised storage where there isn’t enough space to add in a wardrobe. Chest of drawers that double as a tv console is another space saving element that can be added. For bigger size bedrooms, plan for a luxurious double bed, with long side tables. Add a seating space so you can avoid working or watching tv from your bed.

Always leave comfortable walking spaces next to the bed so you do not hit furniture on your way to the washroom in the middle of the night. Use minimal depth tv panels and consoles to allow enough space after the bed.

Incorporating Furniture That Fits Your Needs

Choosing the right furniture can greatly contribute to your comfort and convenience in the bedroom. Assess your storage needs and select furniture pieces that not only provide ample storage space but also fit the overall aesthetic of the room. Customizable furniture, such as modular closets or adjustable shelving units, can be a great option for creating a personalized bedroom design.

Furthermore, when selecting furniture for your bedroom, consider the materials and finishes that complement your style preferences. Whether you prefer a modern, minimalist look or a cozy, traditional feel, choosing furniture that resonates with your personal taste can enhance the overall appeal of the space. Investing in high-quality pieces that are both functional and visually pleasing can transform your bedroom into a sanctuary where you can unwind and recharge.

4. Picking the Right Bed

When choosing a bed, ensure you take a back shape that is comfortable for you to sit with. A lot of people choose bed backs just by looks and then struggle to enjoy their time in bed. Whether you’re reading, or watching tv, or just resting, the bed back is equally important as the mattress. Ensure your mattress is in the perfect size as per your bed so that it doesn’t move around when you’re sleeping. When trying to find the correct size for your bed, do not forget that while sleeping you do not rest your head right at the bed back, there is always space between the bed back and your head so your bed length should be longer than your height.

When choosing side tables, ensure you take tops that are stone or glass so the top can be cleaned if your drinks leave a spill or a ring on it. For big bedrooms, try and take long side tables. The top of the side table should be of the same height as the bed top after the mattress so you don’t have to bend down to pick and put things. The unit should ideally have 2 drawers, one lockable, one without one. And if you’re charging your appliances on the table, you can look at wire organisers, or get an appliance tray built in that conceals all your devices. A lot of great side table designs also involve drawers with built in charging points.

5. Finding Suitable Furniture

A bed bench or an ottoman is a very handy piece of furniture if your bedroom has the space for it. It’s where you can throw your clothes, your extra pillows, cushions, bedcovers you can sit on it to untie or tie your laces, and is also a great place for you to sit on to meditate, stretch or just unwind. Aesthetically, it brings the bed set together. A day bed is put on the side of the bed, ideally in a corner wall, or next to a window can be a great place to sit on, read, put your feet up and relax while watching the tv whilst avoiding doing all these activities on the bed. It easily becomes a sofa as well. A lounger chair with a foot stool facing the bed is an old favourite. Add a lamp next to it for some old school aesthetics. 2 sofa chairs with a coffee table is most ideal for a master bedroom as it allows the couple to sit and talk or just enjoy their morning coffee.

Depending on the size of your bedroom, tv consoles can vary in size, height, depth. To give the bedroom a minimal or clutter free look, people now opt for low height consoles. Ensure the height isn’t too low or you wont be able to use your set top box remote with ease. A study table integrated with a tv console is a great idea for deep bedrooms. A drawer unit like console is a relatively old and foregone concept but is great for storage.

Choosing the Right Color Palette

The colors you choose for your bedroom can have a profound impact on your mood and overall ambiance. It's essential to consider various factors when selecting a color palette that suits your space and personal preferences. One crucial aspect to keep in mind is the natural light in your bedroom. Natural light can affect how colors appear in a room. Rooms with ample natural light can handle darker colors without feeling too heavy, while rooms with limited natural light may benefit from lighter shades to create a more open and airy feel.

6. Matching Colors with Your Personality

Your personality and personal style should also be reflected in your bedroom's color scheme. If you prefer a calming and minimalist atmosphere, neutral tones and pastel colors may be more suitable. These softer hues can promote a sense of tranquility and relaxation, perfect for creating a peaceful retreat in your home. On the other hand, if you have a bold and vibrant personality, don't be afraid to incorporate bold colors and patterns into your bedroom design. Expressing your personality through color can make your bedroom feel like a true reflection of yourself. Consider incorporating accent colors to add depth and interest to your bedroom decor. Accents can be introduced through pillows, throws, artwork, or even a statement piece of furniture. These pops of color can inject personality into your space and tie the room's design elements together harmoniously.

For a stylish bedroom, try and use more of wallpaper than wall paint on the walls of your bedroom. They make the walls softer to touch, and calmer to feel. Dark bedrooms are preferred by teenagers and young adults but for an elegant look, go towards wood finishes, beiges, and light colours in your bedroom as you do not want to feel heavy or aggressive in your bedroom. It should be a space of calm, peace and tranquility. If really inclined, try to use colours only on the bed back wall or in the furniture and accessories.

7. Selecting Suitable Lighting

Bedroom Lighting is crucial to focus on as it can cause a huge impact on your experience with your space. Try and use diffused lighting throughout the bedroom as direct or task lighting disrupts sleep when used pre sleep. If using night lamps, ensure they’re in red light as it’s the most conducive to sleep. If you have a study or a work table in your room, only use task lighting for that space. Try and use concealed lighting under your side tables, ceiling coves, coves within the tv panel to have mood lighting.

There are a lot of options for bedside lamps. You could go for pendant lamps if your side table is small, or for table lamps for grander side tables. Wall sconces are like wall sculptures and when put symmetrically aligned to the bed and side tables, give a very elegant, well planned bed back look. Try and use sconces with movable reading lights as they are very handy in the night. Invest in a good floor lamp if you have a lounger chair in your room.

Natural light is also very important - our body functions best when it is in tune with our circadian rhythm - the best way to sleep is in complete absence of light, best way to wake up is with our eyes opening to natural light. So it is ideal to have motorised blinds with bedside controls for most optimum comfort. Ensure you have either a set of 2 blinds - one sheer and one night out, or a set of night out blinds and sheer curtains. Program your system so the night outs open around your wake up time to allow for natural light in your room. Keep only the sheers during the day so the natural light can bring its positive and disinfectant energy through the room. A few hours before sleeping, bring down the night out blinds that do not allow any lights into your room so you can sleep without any disturbance. For a more economic solution, just keep the settings manual and you get up from the bed and operate these blinds yourself.

In addition to natural light, incorporating various types of artificial lighting can help create different moods and enhance the functionality of your bedroom. Consider using task lighting, such as bedside lamps or reading lights, for specific activities. Ambient lighting, such as overhead fixtures or wall sconces, can provide a soft and relaxing glow in the evening.

Incorporating Personal Touches

Adding personal items and artwork to your bedroom can make it feel more welcoming and reflect your unique personality. Your bedroom is a sanctuary where you can truly express yourself, so don't be afraid to infuse it with items that bring you joy and comfort. Consider incorporating a cozy reading nook in a corner of your bedroom, complete with a plush armchair, a small bookshelf filled with your favorite reads, and a soft throw blanket. This little retreat within your room can provide a peaceful escape for you to unwind at the end of a long day.

8. Adding Artwork and Decorations

Hang artwork or decorative pieces that resonate with your personal taste and style. Whether it's abstract paintings, vintage posters, or inspirational quotes, incorporating artwork in your bedroom can add a touch of elegance and make the space feel more personalized. Choose pieces that speak to you on a deeper level and bring you a sense of joy every time you gaze upon them. Don't forget to include elements of nature in your bedroom decor, such as potted plants, floral arrangements, or nature-inspired artwork.

Bringing the outdoors inside can create a calming and rejuvenating atmosphere, fostering a connection to the natural world within your personal space. While your living room is a space built to entertain guests, your bedroom is your most private space so design and curate it with everything that makes you feel happy without fear of judgement. Use things that invoke some special emotions in you, whether it is a family picture, or a vision board, some motivational posters, or just some souvenirs from a good time.

Use things that would genuinely make you happy and things that you would want to remember the first time you wake up in the morning. If you like reading books, build in a book case. If you like meditating, make yourself a calm corner. If you like nature, do up your window seating in a nice way. Your bedroom is one space in the world where you should without worry and abandon create everything that makes you uniquely you. Try to not buy generic Pinterest inspired decor, choose every element as per your convenience and happiness.

9. Other Important Factors to Consider

Ensure all furniture legs are recessed from the edge so your toe doesn’t hit the leg and hurt you. Buy rugs and ensure either they are bigger than the bed width or use 2 rugs on either sides of the bed. Upon getting down from the bed, your feet should hit the rug.

Use cleanable fabric on the bed back so you can wipe off oil or lotion or face pack remains. Use built in ceiling speakers and do sound insulation in the walls if you enjoy loud music in your room, listening or playing.

If you’re a student, or a professional, try and build in a small space for you to be able to do urgent work or to store your laptop and other electronics. Plan for a charging space away from the bed, next to the TV.

Try to have no doors on the bed back or right opposite the bed as these are the walls you can ideally design the best. Try placing your bed so that the window is on the side of your bed, not at the back or front.

If you believe in vastu, ensure you don’t sleep with your head in the North Direction.
